A Young College Student Worries about Her Upcoming Travels Abroad

09 Jul

Dear Belleruth,

I'm going to Spain to study abroad in January. I already have your  General Wellness and Stress, mp3s. Do you think that these will work for me? I know that once I get over there and into the routine I’ll be fine, but the first few months and weeks will be hard. Do you plan to put out any travel stress tapes for anxiety or no? It will all be new, and I want a way to cope without crying a lot like I did my first year of college.

Dear M,

Yes, I think these will be fine. There's enough variety in there for you to find at least some things that will work well for you, and it's great that you already know that the stress is only going to be temporary…. (and probably not nearly as tough as that first year of college!). We have a terrific audio for fear of flying by KRS Edstrom, called  Fly without Fear, but it doesn’t sound like this is the problem so much as strange new surroundings.

I applaud your decision to go ahead and do this, in spite of your worries about being upset at first. This bodes well for your future - not letting the anxiety stop you. (And as one great therapist friend of mine used to tell his clients, "Anxiety is just anxiety. It won’t kill you and it’s actually very close to the way excitement feels - a lot of people confuse the two!").

Best of luck and enjoy your time abroad!
