Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Nursing in Richmond, VA, studied the efficacy of guided imagery on 72 women diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The 10-week randomized trial looked at the impact of guided imagery on self-efficacy, perceived stress, and selected bio-behavioral factors - FMS symptoms and immune biomarkers.
Participants in both the guided imagery(GI) group and in the treatment as usual (TAU) control condition, completed measurement questionnaires and donated 3 cc of blood at baseline, at six and at 10 weeks.

In looking for quick and effective treatment for PTS for returning service members, Scripps Hospital Center for Integrative Medicine, in conjunction with Camp Pendleton and the Samueli Institute, conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine whether a complementary medicine intervention (Healing Touch with Guided Imagery [HT+GI]) reduced PTSD symptoms, as compared to treatment as usual (TAU) with returning combat-exposed active duty Marines with significant symptoms of posttraumatic stress.
Active duty military (n = 123) were randomized to 6 sessions (within 3 weeks) of either Healing Touch plus Guided Imagery (Healing Trauma by Belleruth Naparstek) or Treatment as Usual. Outcomes measured were PTSD symptoms (the PCL – i.e., the PTSD Check List) and depression (Beck Depression Inventory), quality of life (SF-36), and hostility (Cook–Medley Hostility Inventory).
Online CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) has already proved effective for alleviating depression in adults. So, researchers from the Trimbos Institute in Utrecht, Netherlands explored whether an online course for depressed adolescents would be efficacious as well.
This randomized, controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness of online treatment for depressed young people (ages 16-25) used for the intervention arm an online group course called Grip op Je Dip (Master Your Mood, or MYM).
The investigators randomly assigned 244 young people with depressive symptoms to the online MYM course or to a wait-list control condition. The primary outcome measure was the Center for Epidemiologic Studies’ Depression Scale, administered at 3 months and 6 months post-treatment. Secondary outcomes were anxiety (measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and mastery (Mastery Scale).
Investigators from Bright Path Yoga in Plano, Texas discuss the benefits of yoga and meditation for fibromyalgia, a chronic syndrome characterized by widespread pain, sleep disturbance, stiffness, fatigue, headache, and mood disturbance. The author outlines a strategy for using yoga and meditation as a therapy for fibromyalgia sufferers.
A preliminary 8-week study with eleven participants found significant improvement in the overall health status of the participants and in symptoms of stiffness, anxiety, and depression. Significant improvements were also seen in the reported number of days "felt good" and number of days "missed work" because of fibromyalgia.
Researchers from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago examined using the telephone as a treatment delivery medium for seriously depressed patients with access barriers to face-to-face treatment [Ed. note. We assume this refers to it being hard to get out of bed, get out of the house, get to the therapist’s office, etc, when depressed.]
They compared telephone-administered cognitive behavioral therapy (T-CBT) to face-to-face CBT for reducing attrition (drop out rate) in depressed primary care patients.
A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 325 Chicago-area primary care patients with major depressive disorder. They were randomly assigned to 18 sessions of either phone CBT or face-to-face CBT.
