Grand Ideas from Within
Grand Ideas from Within is a special guided imagery program for troubled kids at the West Feliciana Middle School in Francisville, Louisiana. The brainchild of 2 inventive, caring educator-social workers, Janice McDermott, M.Ed, LCSW and Joan Stewart LCSW, the program uses weekly
Students were referred by faculty members, usually because of family problems, disruptive behavior, anxiety, depression and/or bereavement. Sixty percent of the first batch of 24 students had a disciplinary record; 40% had none.
By the end of the semester, school disciplinary reports on the kids in the program revealed a 50% improvement over the Fall Semester, and teachers reported a 68% improvement in behavior. Better yet, the kids themselves thought they’d improved a hefty 85% worth.
Encouraged by the success of the program, McDermott & Stewart are now working on a weekly lesson plan for publication, to help others integrate similar programs into their schools and classrooms. The booklet will include an easy-to-lead guided imagery script and other tools and techniques that worked so well at West Feliciana.
Based on their experience, the creators of Grand Ideas from Within are sure that the program will help empower students in other schools to act responsibly, make smarter choices, improve character & ethical behavior, increase self-esteem and reduce discipline and in-school suspension referrals.
