A woman reports a wonderful story of trauma recovery in her grandmother - already a trauma survivor

A woman reports a wonderful story of trauma recovery in her grandmother - already a trauma survivor from her days living in the violence-torn country of Haiti - after Katrina flattened her..
My beloved grandmother settled in New Orleans, after leaving Haiti many years ago. She suffered greatly from the terrible events and traumatic rulership of the corrupt government there. She lost two brothers, an uncle, multiple friends and many neighbors to violence.

Even though she built a good life in Louisiana, she suffered nightmares and "black moods", and all of us knew she was revisiting in her mind the terrible times in Haiti. But in spite of those memories, she was a loving person and a great contributor to the community and family.

After Katrina she was distraught. All her past traumas came back to her mind with a vengeance. She did not want to get out of bed or get dressed, she was so disheartened. She lost her appetite. Much of the day, she stared off into space. My family could not reach her. This lasted many months. They were at wit’s end.

A church friend brought over her CD player and the guided imagery for healing trauma. My cousin reported to me that my grandmother listened to this CD over and over again in her room, many times a day. After about a week and a half, she started moving around in her room. Then she started coming downstairs. This went on for many weeks. We observed her coming back to her old self.

One day she called up the church friend and gave her back the CD and the player. She is now almost the way she was. My family is grateful and we wanted to tell you about this. I found the Health Journeys website and then found the Inspiring Story page. I decided that my Grandmother’s story should join the others.

Thank you.
