Guided Imagery and the Fit Bit: A Marriage Made in Heaven

09 Apr

We just got this bulletin from COL (R) Jill Chambers, founder of This Able Vet.  She and her partner, pal and singing co-conspirator, Michael Peterson travel far and wide, providing training, inspiration, amazing music and concrete, practical assistance to our active duty military, transitioning troops and veterans, here and abroad.

As a result of their considerable travel, jumping of time zones and a history of dodging the occasional Pentagon terror attack, the odd shelling in obscure locations in Iraq and all-round, generally adrenaline-spiking situations, they have had occasional issues with sleep disruption.

Guided imagery has been a help to them, and they’re always offering generous testimony about that at their various presentations.

But recently they started working with a crazy little app called the Fit Bit Ultra, a device that tracks activity – daily steps, stairs climbed, distance traveled, calories burned - to a very detailed extent.

It can also be worn at night when it will track how long and how well you sleep, including how many times you wake up during the night.

So being the curious types that they are, Jill and Michael started comparing their Fit Bit generated sleep scores with and without listening to guided imagery before bedtime.  Here’s their report.  It’s pretty wild. Jill writes:

“WE LOVE OUR FIT BIT!  We are having so much fun with ours in all areas - food, exercise, and sleep.  So speaking of sleep - we have used this for 11 days now and check this out:

My average score has been 94% sleep efficiency, waking between 5-8 times a night.  Michael's average has been 85% sleep efficiency, waking up around 15 times a night.

So, for the last 2 days, we both decided to try our Healthful Sleep imagery before settling in for the night, along with the Fit Bit.  Here is the scoop after 2 days!!

My Average went to 99%, waking up ONCE!
Michael's Average went up to 94%, waking up 3 times!

We're gonna keep making up tests for ourselves – we’ve become our very own not so random clinical trial!  ☺

So there you have it. Pretty cool.  We think this device has a future in research, don’t you?
