Help for Fibromyalgia: A Man Shares His Trial & Error Wellness Solutions

21 Jun

We got this email a while ago from a man coping with fibromyalgia, who got help for pain by using his own persistence and ingenuity.  His latest addition to his FM toolkit was finding meditation for fibromyalgia, using mindfulness.  Here are his own words:

As someone who has suffered from the chronic pain of fibromyalgia, I can definitively say that it can feel quite lonely. People can be judgmental and unsympathetic, as if we were making these symptoms up.  I have been over-medicated with painkillers and anti-depressants in the past, and I have been told that it’s all in my head. I have fired my fair share of doctors, and now I have competent, understanding medical care.

Over the years, through trial and error, I have found different methods to rely on, methods that increase my sense of self-agency and ease my painful symptoms.  I do daily stretching exercises and get a therapeutic massage once a week.  I am careful with my diet.  I avoid caffeine, sugars and alcohol.  These things have yielded the most relief for me.

I am now exp
loring meditation as another source of help.  I have begun practicing Jon Kabat-Zinn’s mindfulness meditation and Sharon Saltzberg style loving kindness meditation.  I also use Belleruth Naparstek’s guided imagery for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue.  I am hoping that in the weeks to come, my pain will be even more abated. It feels good to be taking charge of my health and exploring new methods. I feel I am discovering uncharted paths, within and without.
