Miriam Franco Launches Guided Imagery Foundation (TGIF)

08 May

We just got this announcement from Miriam Franco, MSW, PsyD, a social worker-psychologist who’s done a great deal of clinical work and research on guided imagery for people with Multiple Sclerosis.  As you can see, she’s put her own blood, sweat and personal resources into her new Guided Imagery Foundation, and she gets a hats off and a “bravissima!” from everyone around here at Health Journeys.  Here are her own words:

Hi Belleruth,

I wanted to let you know that The Guided Imagery Foundation (TGIF), a nonprofit I developed, is now launched.

I have written an article about it for Imagery International and am its founder and first president. After much personal expense and work, it is my hope that TGIF will enable GI practitioners to obtain innovative funding for community based GI interventions and research on GI efficacy.

Also, I have launched a controlled study with Brant Oliver, MSN at Dartmouth Hitchcock MS Center on use of my GI to lower anxiety and injection anxiety in MS patients.

Thus far, the experimental group who listened to my GI script on MP3 players has increased adherence to Betaseron injections significantly as compared to the control group, who were exposed to a standard nursing educational injection protocol.

The study is near completion and is being presented as a poster platform at the 2011 Consortium of MS Centers Conference in Montreal June 3, 2011. It is called the SIMS study. I will be happy to send you an abstract if you are interested.

I will also be completing a small pilot study on using GI to improve sleep, focus and confidence among a sample of adjudicated male youth at a residential treatment center in the Philly suburbs.

We salute Dr. Franco for putting her time, energy and checkbook behind what she believes in, and for walking the walk while she talks the talk!
