A whole new world of powerful data on the human brain opening up, thanks to the dazzling capability of P.E.T. scans and M.R.I.s... and researchers like Bessel van der Kolk, Jon Kabat-Zinn and David Spiegel..
Hello again.

Well, Cleveland is blanketed with white, white snow and foggy sky, making the whole world show up in soft, gauzey focus from my third floor window... it’s a kind of a exquisitely subtle, taupe-gray landscape with all the color gently bleached out of it, except for the soft gold lights in other peoples’ windows. A soup-making day, for sure.

The world of consciousness research is exploding, by the way. It’s quite something to see a whole new world of powerful data on the human brain opening up to all of us, thanks to the dazzling capability of things like P.E.T. scans and M.R.I.s... not to mention dedicated, curious and ingenious researchers like Bessel van der Kolk MD, Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD and now David Spiegel MD.

Last week we posted Kabat-Zinn et al’s discoveries on the (now) very observable changes in the brain that happen during meditation http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12883106&dopt=Abstract. Van der Kolk is known for spearheading the study of what happens in the brain of someone with posttraumatic stress during a flashback http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9238197&dopt=Abstract . Now David Spiegel tells us about intriguing brain changes that occur during hypnosis. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12908748&dopt=Abstract.

These aren’t just interesting findings in the abstract; they point the way to how we can treat and ameliorate all manner of pesky-to-devastating conditions of human suffering. I’m certain we’ll look back in a decade or two and see that these were Grand Old Renaissance Days in the field of mind-body medicine and holistic health.

Do check out our brand, new titles when you have a minute. We’re all pretty pumped about the wonderful new mind-body-spirit guided exercises we’ve located.
