Free, Mullti-Lingual Emergency Response Kits for Trauma around the World

15 Apr

Hey, everyone.  We’re often asked for resources in other languages, for use in other countries and especially for traumatized communities.  We usually shrug, wishing we knew of somewhere to send them.

So imagine my surprise when I learned just recently of an international nonprofit group called Capacitar which does trauma relief work all around the world.  Started as a church-based organization, they mostly work in countries and communities affected by violence, poverty and trauma.

They introduce methods such as Tai Chi, guided imagery, Acupressure, Energy Medicine (meridian tapping), hand massage, body movement, and other mind-body wellness modalities.

Best of all, they’ve developed an “Emergency Response Kit” consisting of Tai Chi, Fingerholds, EFT, Head-Neck-Shoulder Release, and Acupressure points for stress, crisis and depression – in other words, best practices that are easily transferred to other countries and cultures.

These resources were first developed in the US and are now used in places as diverse as El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chile, Belize, Haiti, the UK, Israel, Palestine, Rwanda, Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, Botswana, East Timor and Indonesia .

And who knew?  Listen up, people: these kits are available in Arabic, Russian, French, German, Haiti-Creole, Hebrew, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, Xhosa, Russian, Spanish, Swahili,  and English. And you can download them free on the site.

They also provide trainings in the US and around the world.

Yikes, what a great resource!  I wish I’d known about it earlier.

Maybe some day we mental health professionals won’t be so clueless about what religiously-based organizations are doing in tandem with us… really, so many more people would benefit if this parallel play stopped, and we made better use of our joint discoveries.

All best,
