Great Book on Couple's Experience with Alzheimer's

09 Jul

Hello again, All.

I just finished a marvelous book on dealing with 6 years of a husband’s Alzheimer’s Disease, from his diagnosis to his death, from the point of view of his wife, a heavy-hitter meditator (- the two of them were, actually – both husband and wife were serious and accomplished practitioners, teachers and seekers).  She recounts how they did their best to be present and make the most of an exasperating, loving, heartbreaking, illuminating, cruel learning experience that demands just about everything you’ve got.

It was given to me by a friend, and I started out reading it only for that reason – I was thinking this would not exactly be the light summer reading I was looking for.

Instead, I was riveted by the narrative – a love story, really - and couldn’t put it down.  It’s called Ten Thousand Joys & Ten Thousand Sorrows: A Couple’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s.  It’s by Olivia Ames Hoblitzelle, and I recommend it to anyone who is taking care of a sick or disabled person they love; for anyone who wants to expand their practice of being present; and for anyone looking for a good, brainy, self-aware, honest, unsentimental, unromanticized recounting of a couple’s love and courage.

It’s a very satisfying and enlightening read.

Okay, take care and be well.

All best,
