Proudly Introducing Roberta Shapiro’s ‘Positive Parenting: Meditations for Staying Cool, Calm & Collected with Your Kids’

As you may have noticed, the Health Journeys label has been expanding its list of authors and practitioners. One category I’ve been eager to expand is mind-body tools for anxiety.

As a therapist, I’ve noticed that stressors on parents and child rearing are growing more and more rampant these days. And I’m certain that stress-generated anxiety is responsible for over half of the in-the-moment, bone-headed, parental moves we make with our kids.

I’m talking about impatience, popping off with unfiltered, unkind words, loss of perspective of the bigger picture, half-hearted, preoccupied listening, weirdness with boundaries (too many or too few), worrying about the wrong things at the wrong time – everyday stuff we all do. From my 30-plus years of doing therapy, I pronounce that most of this can be laid at Anxiety’s doorstep. Anxiety makes us all stupid.

So, I figured you can’t have too many good recordings to help parents with their stressors and anxiety. I started looking around.

I happened upon the work of clinical social worker Roberta Shapiro on the internet, and requested a few of her audios to sample. (She told me she’d once attended a workshop I’d given for a long ago NICABM conference at Hilton Head, on how to make an audio recording, and that was what got her started. :)

I liked her voice tremendously – very calming, trustworthy and healing, with wonderful timbre and texture - and I recognized the skillful ways she’d incorporated several classic hypnotic techniques to support behavior and attitude change.

Roberta demonstrated tremendous understanding of what it takes for people to make a therapeutic shift, born of years in her Miami-based clinical practice with families, kids, and individuals. I was impressed.

But once again, I felt the technical production of the audios and the music scoring them were just not up to the smashingly fine quality of the voice and the clinically informed narrative. There was nothing wrong with either, but they didn’t enhance or strengthen the work. I thought that voice and narrative deserved better – top quality, first-rate music and technical engineering.

Enter Maestro Composer Steven Mark Kohn and his amazing meditative music library (he’s scored 9 pieces for us over the years); and the virtuoso skillfulness of Bruce Gigax’s sound engineering…. Put that all together and…

Listen to this sample, will ya? I could not be more pleased with Positive Parenting: Meditations for Staying Cool, Calm & Collected with Kids by Roberta Shapiro, M.Ed, LCSW.
