A woman pops in Weight Loss CD and sees her long-departed grandmother, mother and beloved Pomeranian, no less! Now she wants to know if this happens to others, and if it will happen to her again..
Dear Belleruth,
After reading the recommendation in Dr. Weil’s newsletter, I ordered your Weight Loss CD. Although I‘m not obese, I still can use to lose a few pounds. (On the other hand, my husband can use to lose 50, but that''s another story. I''m hoping if this works for me, I can get him to try it.)

Here is my question. This afternoon I put the CD in for the first time, and kind of chuckled in the beginning. I just could not believe I would get sucked into another weight loss scam. So I did not go into this with a fully open mind.

I would say after about what felt like 5 minutes (but I really don''t know since my eyes were closed), I began to see an image. At first I could not focus in on it, and then she came into clear view. It was my grandmother, who had passed more than 25 years ago. This is the first time I have seen her since her death... meaning I have never even had a dream of her that I can recall.

Anyway, she started to morph into MY MOTHER (who died 10 years ago). She looked at me and put her hands up to her mouth in shock, and started to cry (like she was so surprised to see me).

Well I lay there balling, but refused to open my eyes. I did not want this to end. I have been waiting 10 years for her to come to me in my dreams, but until today, I had not had the experience.

Well, as quick as she appeared, she left. But then, within seconds, my precious little 14 year old Pomeranian ( I had to put him to sleep last month) was sitting there, looking so handsome, with his hair blowing in the wind. Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I cried so hard, and wanted so badly to open my eyes, run to the phone and tell my husband what just happened, but I did not want to miss anything. Plus I was hoping my father would stop by (I lost him 11 years ago).

It was hard for me to think about anything else for the rest of the CD. But I hung in there until the end. I want to do it again tonight before bed, but I''m afraid for now that all I will be doing is looking for my loved ones.

My question for you is, do you think it is possible for this to work for me going into it everytime, hoping to see a loved one? I also want to know if this has happened to many other people. I''m a little confused over this experience. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thank You,
Darla

Dear Darla,

  1. Yes, the weight loss imagery can help you lose weight, even if your motivation for listening has now switched to hoping for another rendezvous with your loved ones. The imagery will even have an impact if you fall asleep every time you listen and never hear a conscious word. On some level, the images hit their mark. So don’t worry about that. Just keep listening. If it makes you feel clearer, you can even state your dual intentions to yourself before listening: to help with the weight and to invite more of these visits.

  2. Yes, this does happen to other people, although probably not the majority and not every time. In fact, it’s more likely to happen when you’re not expecting it and when it takes you off guard, exactly as it happened for you that first time. (When you’re looking for it to happen, it’s less likely to, because you’re trying to hard to make it happen, and that works against this type of spontaneous experience). So don’t be too crushed if this was a one-time-only experience, or if it only happens now and then. That’s often the case.
If you want a scientific explanation, I do my best to spell out the theoretical physics and basic mechanics of this sort of thing in reader-friendly language in Chapter 5 of Your Sixth Sense. In fact, that’s my favoritest chapter in the whole book.

But suffice it to say here that imagery is processed in large part in the temporal lobes of the brain, and those structures have been shown to be the seat of a lot of mystical experience, among other things. For instance, when the temporal lobes are gently stimulated electrically, people have visions and a felt sense of spiritual presence… things like that. So you could hang your hat on that scientific factoid, or you could just say your grandmother, mom and dog felt it was time for a visit. Either way works for me.

I hope this helps.

All best wishes to you and your family, alive or departed, for a beautiful holiday season.
